FCA Recalls 265,512 Ram ProMaster Vans That Can Lose Power Steering Assist
Recall 26V-621 covers 265,512 Ram ProMaster vans from 2022 to 2026 that can lose power steering assist. The fix is not ready yet. Check every VIN on NHTSA.gov.

On September 29, 2026, FCA US filed NHTSA recall 26V-621 for 265,512 Ram ProMaster vans: 2022 to 2026 ProMaster 1500, 2500, and 3500 vans and 2024 to 2026 ProMaster 3500 EVs. Water can get into the electric power steering wiring harness and corrode it, and the van can lose power steering assist. The repair will be free, but as of October 30, 2026, the final fix is not ready.
What goes wrong with the steering
A corroded harness can cut steering assist for a moment or for good. The wheel still turns, but it takes more effort, which can raise the risk of a crash. FCA says there is no warning before it fails. The power steering fault light may come on once assist is lost.
FCA estimates that 7.7% of the recalled vans have the defect. Across all its markets, it counted 2,799 warranty claims and 191 field reports that may be linked to the problem, and it knows of one accident and no injuries. NHTSA opened an investigation in March 2026 after 19 owner complaints about 2022 and 2023 ProMasters.
Which ProMaster vans are covered
The recall covers vans built until mid-October 2025, when FCA stopped building them with the affected steering. Vans built after that are not included.
- ProMaster 1500: 44,391 vans built August 17, 2021 to October 17, 2025.
- ProMaster 2500: 147,204 vans built August 19, 2021 to October 18, 2025.
- ProMaster 3500: 72,043 vans built August 19, 2021 to October 17, 2025.
- ProMaster 3500 EV: 1,874 vans built August 31, 2023 to October 13, 2025.
Converters build lowered-floor wheelchair vans on the ProMaster for NEMT companies. A converted van keeps the VIN FCA gave it at the factory (49 CFR 565.13), so a converted ProMaster shows up in a VIN search like any other.
When the fix and the letters come
- October 6, 2026: VINs became searchable on NHTSA.gov, and FCA put a stop sale on recalled vans still in dealer stock.
- November 17 to 23, 2026: FCA plans to mail interim letters that warn owners of the risk before the fix is ready.
- Later: a second letter once the final remedy is available. In its October 6, 2026 notice, FCA told dealers it expects the repair to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Dealers will inspect each van and replace the wiring harness and the steering gear as needed, free of charge. The new harnesses are better sealed against water.
If you already paid to fix this problem, keep the repair order and receipt. Federal rules require FCA’s reimbursement plan to cover repairs owners paid for since at least September 29, 2025, one year before the filing (49 CFR 573.13). The plan may leave out a repair the van’s warranty would have covered for free.
What NEMT owners should do now
- Check every ProMaster VIN. Search each one at nhtsa.gov/recalls, or call Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403 and give recall number 92D. NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline is 1-888-327-4236. Note the result in each van’s maintenance log.
- Brief your drivers. A steering fault light, or steering that suddenly turns heavy, means the driver pulls over where it is safe, parks, and calls dispatch instead of finishing the trip. Use your breakdown plan to get riders where they are going.
- Line up a backup van. The final fix is not ready, so a van that loses assist may sit at the dealer. Plan cover for standing dialysis and therapy rides, such as a spare van or a short-term rental.
- Book the repair when your letter says it is ready. Keep the interim letter in the van’s file until then.
- Keep the paperwork. File the dealer repair order with the van’s maintenance records for broker and state inspections. Before you buy a used wheelchair van built on a ProMaster, run its VIN, and once the fix is out, ask for proof of the repair.
If a ProMaster carries a Ricon lift, also check the lift against the Ricon wheelchair lift recall, which follows the lift rather than the van’s VIN.
