# SCAN Transportation Providers: How SCAN Health Plan Rides Work and How to Get Them

Canonical URL: https://nemtguide.com/health-plans/scan-health-plan/ · Updated 2026-09-30

SCAN Health Plan members book rides through SCAN Transportation, a phone line and online portal run by SafeRide Health, so SCAN transportation providers are the companies in SafeRide's network. For 2026, 54 of SCAN's 74 Medicare Advantage plans sold to individuals include rides, with a median of 40 one-way trips a year, in California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas.

- SCAN rides are booked through SCAN Transportation, which runs on SafeRide Health, so SafeRide is where you apply.
- For 2026, 54 of 74 SCAN plans include rides, with a median of 40 one-way trips a year.
- Wheelchair riders must book 48 business hours ahead, so Monday wheelchair trips are booked by the Thursday before.
- SCAN sends the driver one hour before the appointment, to the curb unless the member asks for the door.
- SCAN members who use up the year's rides can buy more at a discount through SCAN Transportation.

SCAN Health Plan, a not-for-profit Medicare Advantage plan, sells 2026 plans in California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, and Washington. Its members do not call a ride company. They call SCAN Transportation, or book online, and SCAN's own transportation page sends online bookings to SafeRide Health's portal. SCAN Group, the plan's parent, also invested in SafeRide: it announced a strategic investment on July 19, 2022.

## Who books SCAN rides

SCAN's 2026 transportation page gives members two ways to book:

- **By phone.** SCAN Transportation at 1-844-714-2218 (TTY 711), Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. SafeRide's SCAN Health Plan member page lists the same number.
- **Online.** From the Benefits tab of the SCAN member account, the Transportation tile opens the SafeRide portal. Members can also use SafeRide's MySafeRide app.

SafeRide then sends each ride to a transportation company, or to a rideshare car. So a company becomes one of SCAN's transportation providers by joining SafeRide's network in SCAN's counties. For SafeRide's full signup and credentialing rules, see the [SafeRide Health](https://nemtguide.com/brokers/saferide-health/) page.

## How many rides SCAN plans cover in 2026

CMS's 2026 plan benefit file, dated October 1, 2025, lists 74 SCAN plan options sold to individuals, counting SCAN's VillageHealth plans. Of those, 54 file a ride benefit, all to plan-approved health care places, counted in one-way trips.

| State | Counties where SCAN ride plans sell | Plans with rides | One-way trips a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| California | 19, from Sacramento and San Francisco to San Diego | 40 of 54 | 18 to 60, and unlimited in SCAN Connections |
| Arizona | Maricopa, Pima, and Pinal | 5 of 6 | 48 to 56 |
| Nevada | Clark and Nye | 3 of 4 | 48 to 60 |
| New Mexico | Bernalillo and Sandoval | 3 of 4 | 28 to 48 |
| Texas | Bexar, Fort Bend, Harris, and Montgomery | 3 of 4 | 48 to 54 |
| Washington | None (SCAN's two plans there, in Pierce, Spokane, and Thurston, have no rides) | 0 of 2 | None |

The median limit is 40 one-way trips a year, and the most common limits are 40 (7 plans), 48, 30, and 32 (6 plans each), and 54 (5 plans). The plans with no ride benefit are every SCAN MyChoice plan, both Washington plans, the three Sutter Senior Advantage plans, SCAN Prime, SCAN Compass, SCAN Essential Savings, and SCAN Venture in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

The same plan name can carry a different limit in each county. SCAN Classic shows how wide the spread is:

| SCAN Classic, 2026 | One-way trips a year |
|---|---|
| Sacramento, Placer, Yolo, and San Joaquin counties | 18 |
| San Francisco County | 24 |
| Alameda and San Mateo counties | 28 |
| Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, New Mexico | 28 |
| Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura counties, and the Fresno, Madera, Kings, and Tulare area | 32 |
| Riverside County | 36 |
| San Diego County, and Santa Clara and Stanislaus counties | 40 |
| San Bernardino County | 48 |
| Maricopa, Pima, and Pinal (Arizona), Clark and Nye (Nevada), and the four Texas counties | 54 |

### Which SCAN plans list medical transport

The CMS file also shows how each plan says its rides travel. Thirty-one SCAN ride plans list taxi, rideshare, and van. The other 23 add medical transport, and they are all special needs plans:

- **SCAN Balance**, a chronic condition plan filed with CMS for diabetes, chronic heart failure, and cardiovascular disorders, in every SCAN state but Washington.
- **SCAN Embrace and SCAN Embrace Together**, institutional special needs plans, in Arizona and Southern California.
- **VillageHealth**, for members with chronic kidney disease or a kidney transplant, with 50 one-way trips a year in Riverside and San Bernardino counties and 40 in Los Angeles County.
- **SCAN Connections and SCAN Connections at Home**, the dual eligible plans for members with both Medicare and Medi-Cal in Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, and San Diego, with unlimited trips.

Five plans require approval before a ride, in CMS's file: both SCAN Connections plans, both VillageHealth plans, and SCAN Venture in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. For a VillageHealth member on dialysis three days a week, 50 trips cover about two months of chair days, so ask SafeRide how those riders get rides after the plan limit. See [dialysis transportation](https://nemtguide.com/guides/dialysis-transportation/).

## SCAN's booking rules and your dispatch day

SCAN's member rules decide when trips reach you and how they run:

- **Notice.** Members book at least 24 business hours before pickup, or 48 for a wheelchair user or a member who needs help. Weekends do not count, and the reservation line is closed on weekends. SCAN's own example: a Monday 9 a.m. ride must be booked by 9 a.m. Friday, or by 9 a.m. Thursday for a wheelchair. So every Monday wheelchair ride is booked by the Thursday before.
- **Booking ahead.** Members can reserve up to 30 days ahead, and they tell SCAN Transportation when a ride repeats on a regular basis.
- **Pickup time.** SCAN Transportation schedules the pickup one hour before the member must arrive, so the trip on your manifest starts an hour ahead of the appointment.
- **Curb or door.** The driver picks up at the curb in front of the address given, unless the member asked for the driver to come to the door. See [curb to curb](https://nemtguide.com/glossary/curb-to-curb/) and [door to door](https://nemtguide.com/glossary/door-to-door/).
- **Returns.** SCAN tells members to choose [will-call](https://nemtguide.com/glossary/will-call-trip/) when they do not know when a visit will end. SCAN's page mentions return waits of 30 to 60 minutes, and a member who cannot wait may be offered a rideshare car. A rideshare driver gives no special help, so members who use a wheelchair, walker, or cane wait for another vehicle. That keeps assisted will-call returns with companies like yours. See [managing will-call trips](https://nemtguide.com/guides/managing-will-call-trips/).
- **Late drivers.** The driver should arrive within 10 minutes of the scheduled time. After that, members call 1-844-714-2218, which answers 24 hours a day for late rides.
- **Cancellations.** A ride not canceled before the driver is on the way comes off the member's yearly limit.

### What SCAN tells members about your drivers

SCAN's page sets expectations your drivers must meet. It tells members the transportation company's name will be on the vehicle. A driver should never call a member to cancel, and never hand out a personal phone number or ask the member to call the driver directly. A driver takes the member only to the place on the trip sheet, and a member who gave the wrong address must call SCAN Transportation for a new ride. Train drivers on these points before their first SCAN trip.

## Rides to the grocery store, gym, or senior center

SCAN's transportation page says some plans also allow rides to the grocery store, a senior center, or the gym for members with certain chronic conditions. A trip to visit family does not count. In CMS's file, 27 SCAN special needs plans list transportation for non-medical needs: 18 chronic condition plans (SCAN Balance and SCAN Strive), 7 SCAN Embrace and Embrace Together plans, and the 2 SCAN Connections plans. Each lists taxi, rideshare, or van, to plan-approved places, with approval required. SCAN Classic and the other standard plans list none.

## When a SCAN member uses up the year's rides

SCAN's page tells members who have used their rides that they can schedule more for the rest of the year at a discount through SCAN Transportation, with details in the SCAN Discount Marketplace. Those rides are booked through SCAN Transportation too. If a SCAN member calls you directly for a ride past the limit, it is a [private pay](https://nemtguide.com/guides/private-pay-nemt/) trip at your own price.

SCAN Connections members have one more option. SafeRide has run gas mileage reimbursement for the SCAN Connections population since March 1, 2025. The driver registers first, the member sends one claim per round trip, and SafeRide repays the miles driven, but only for rides booked with SafeRide before the trip.

## How to get SCAN trips

1. **Check your counties.** Match your service area to the county lists above. Outside them, SafeRide has no SCAN Medicare work for you.
2. **Apply to SafeRide.** The form sits on SafeRide's NEMT provider page and will not go through without a real NPI. Name every SCAN county you serve, and complete it inside 30 days, since an unfinished application has to be redone.
3. **Send your files.** Before any SCAN ride, SafeRide needs your insurance certificate naming it as additional insured, with at least $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate in general liability and $500,000 in auto liability, and the checks and training records for each driver.
4. **Show wheelchair capacity.** SCAN's 48-hour rule for wheelchair riders means those trips are planned ahead. Tell your network vendor manager how many wheelchair rides a day you can give SCAN members.
5. **Meet your state's rules.** SafeRide contracts sit on top of state licensing. See the [California](https://nemtguide.com/states/california/), [Arizona](https://nemtguide.com/states/arizona/), [Nevada](https://nemtguide.com/states/nevada/), [New Mexico](https://nemtguide.com/states/new-mexico/), and [Texas](https://nemtguide.com/states/texas/) guides, and [SafeRide in Texas](https://nemtguide.com/brokers/saferide-health/texas/) for its Texas Medicaid work.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I become a SCAN transportation provider?

Join SafeRide Health's network. SCAN members book through SCAN Transportation, and SCAN's transportation page sends online bookings straight to SafeRide's portal. Fill out the signup form on SafeRide's NEMT provider page with your NPI, EIN, insurance limits, fleet, and the counties you serve, then pass SafeRide's credentialing. Say that you serve SCAN counties when you apply.

### What is the SCAN Health Plan transportation number?

Members call SCAN Transportation at 1-844-714-2218 (TTY 711), Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., to book a ride. The same number takes calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week when a driver is more than 10 minutes late. SafeRide's SCAN Health Plan member page lists the same line.

### How many rides do SCAN plans cover?

It depends on the plan and county. Among the 52 SCAN ride plans with a yearly limit in 2026, limits run from 18 to 60 one-way trips, with a median of 40. SCAN Classic alone ranges from 18 in the Sacramento area to 54 in Arizona, Nevada, and Texas. The two SCAN Connections dual eligible plans have no limit.

### How far ahead do SCAN members book rides?

At least 24 business hours before pickup, or 48 business hours for a wheelchair user or a member who needs help. Weekends do not count, so a Monday 9 a.m. ride must be booked by 9 a.m. Friday, or by Thursday for a wheelchair. Members can reserve up to 30 days ahead.

### Does SCAN cover rides to the grocery store or gym?

Some plans do, for members with certain chronic conditions. SCAN's transportation page says some plans allow rides to the grocery store, a senior center, or the gym. In CMS's 2026 file, 27 SCAN special needs plans list transportation for non-medical needs, by taxi, rideshare, or van, with approval required.

### Can a family member get paid to drive a SCAN member?

In SCAN Connections, yes. SafeRide has run gas mileage reimbursement for the SCAN Connections population since March 1, 2025. The driver must register first, each claim covers one full round trip, and every claim needs a ride booked with SafeRide before the trip.
